Poster Design

Qwest Marketing Poster
This is a mock advertisement for Qwest's Home Bundle which I created as in Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 as part of my TC 310 course. The purpose of the project was to create a poster targeted towards the general public which provided information on a Qwest service. In the "Writing" section below, the design rationale for this project can be found. I believe the poster highlights my ability to create well-branded and effective marketing materials for a given audience and shows my grasp of graphic design fundamentals.

Document Editing & Design

Qwest Employee Travel Handbook
I created this mock employee travel handbook from this starting document containing unedited, unorganized, and unformatted text. My challenge was to use this source material to create a a well-organized, easily scannable and visually pleasant print document for Qwest employees. The document, created in Microsoft Word 2007, shows my competence with Word style usage and my document organizational abilities.

Web Development

Conceptual Wireframes for My Website
This Adobe Illustrator document contains several wireframe mockups from the early conceptualization phase of creating this website. Wireframes are an important part of the web development process. In creating these, I needed to consider my audience's needs and allows them to inform decisions on important factors such as effective organization, layout, and navigation. (PDF version available here)

Photoshop Design Treatment for My Website
A key ability of a competent and effective Web developer is being able to take the basic structure of a webpage in the form of a wireframe and visually realize the final design. This Adobe PSD shows how I used Photoshop to flesh out the above wireframes (with some slight changes) into a clean yet visually interesting webpage.

Design Writing

Design Rationale for Qwest Marketing Poster
One of the most important (and often most difficult) challenges for designers is rationalizing their design decisions to peers and/or superiors. A professional must be able to carefully consider the needs and motivations of their user and make their design decisions accordingly. This rationale is an example of how I analyzed the target audience of the Qwest Marketing Poster featured above and addressed its needs with my design decisions.

Website Planning Report
A critical part of getting any large-scale project off the ground is the initial proposal/planning report. This document, created for a web design and publishing course, served as such a report for a quarter-long individual web development project. It exemplifies my ability to think long-term, logically approach extensively scaled projects, and consider many different aspects of such a project ranging from user-centered design decision-making to long-term business models.

Technical/Scientific Writing

Laboratory Report for Thermal Conductivity Experiment
As a student of Materials Science & Engineering in addition to Human-Centered Design & Engineering, I have learned to apply my skills as a clear and effective communicator to writing effective laboratory reports. This report, from an experiment involving the use of LabVIEW to determine the terminal conductivity of materials, is an example of how I address complex procedures and analyses in a way that allows individuals without a complete prior understanding of the topic to follow the experimental process and understand the results.

Report on the Properties of a Carbon Nanotube-Based Ink
Structurally, this document is reasonably similar to the above laboratory report. It is another example of recounting highly complex procedures and analysis methodology in an understandable manner. The discussed project, however, was not a small and self-contained experiment as in the above thermal conductivity report. Instead, it was a quarter-long team project on which I served as team lead and project manager in addition to being responsible for the initial project ideation.

Software Development

USB Camera Image Capture VI for LabVIEW
I created this program as a way to automatically gather visual data on a growing crystal sample over an extended period of time without the need for human intervention after the initial setup. The program is able to capture any number of images at a regular interval of the user's choice and save them as numbered PNG files. It is compatible with any DirectShow compliant USB camera.
